Our Mission

AMERICAN C.H.I.P. INC. is a not for profit organization, setting its sights at mentoring, counseling, tutoring, aiding, and assisting children of all ages, nationalities, religious backgrounds, and social classes, currently in the New York City area (but eventually to all 50 states), who have incarcerated parents.

A parent's arrest and incarceration is a devastating, emotional blow to the child. The parent's incarceration, and separation from the child can lead to psychological, behavioral, health, and educational problems. Children who have incarcerated parents, are highly susceptible to making the same mistakes, and falling into the same cracks that their parents fell into, without the proper guidance. Children of incarcerated parents are 6 to 10 times more likely to end up in prison than the average for young people. Especially if the family resides in a poverty stricken neighborhood, riddled with a high crime and drug rate.

AMERICAN C.H.I.P. believes that positive, caring, role models, coupled with one-on-one relationships, will make a tremendous impact on these children's lives. Experienced, and skilled adult volunteers, with backgrounds in the following; AIDS Awareness, Music, Art, Physical Education, Substance Abuse and Prevention Counseling, Horticulture, Real Estate Development, Law Enforcement, C.P.R., Broadcasting, Airline Pilots, Professional Sports, Platinum Music Producers, Authors, Catering, Firemen, Construction, Computer Technology and much more, have expressed their concerns, and pledged their time to care for, and be supportive to these needy children.

Every AMERICAN C.H.I.P. employee and volunteer time giver, will be screened (including criminal background checks) and thoroughly interviewed, to insure that this organization does not harbor any sexual predators. Also, every employee will be subjected to random drug and alcohol testing, to insure that this organization "practices what it preaches" in deterring the children from, and educating them in regards to; substance abuse.

As previously mentioned, American C.H.I.P.'s children will be matched up for "quality" one-on-one mentoring relationships, in hopes to have profound life changing effects. Along with this program, AMERICAN C.H.I.P. INC. will provide group outings to:

POLICE STATIONS, CRIMINAL COURT SYSTEMS, PRISON SYSTEMS

These visits are to demonstrate to the child the ordeal that their parent went through, and to deter the child from making the very same mistakes.

We also provide group outings to:

PRISON VISITS TO FAMILY MEMBERS

– allows the child to communicate with the parent face to face in the prison environment

– In addition to lowering the likelihood of recidivism among incarcerated parents, there is evidence that maintaining contact with one's incarcerated parent improves a child's emotional response to the incarceration and supports parent-child attachment

At this ceremony the children will participate in a theatrical display, and the child's mentor (or mentors) will present the child with an AMERICAN C.H.I.P. medallion in 14k depicting the AMERICAN C.H.I.P. logo, and an official certificate of achievement signed by AMERICAN C.H.I.P.'s founder, James K. Copeland, II., and the Mayor of New York City. The graduation ceremony (along with some of the child's activities and interactions) will be video taped, and individual videos will be given to each participating child to mail to their incarcerated parent for viewing at the participating prison's parenting program.
